Peter, the elder brother, feels equally cornered by life, trapped between his failing relationship with Naomi and his lingering attachment to Sylvia. Yet his choices: reaching backward, intervening in Ivan’s world carry the disruptive quality of the intermezzo: not the expected move, but the interruption that alters the position on the board.
